Our client is a marine transportation company that provides an essential service for the transportation of freight and passengers to remote coastal communities throughout Quebec. Its network relies on terminals, warehouses, and several ports of call. Based in Rimouski, its land operations team coordinates the entire logistics chain, from freight reception to dockside operations. As part of a long-planned succession strategy, our client is seeking the individual who will eventually lead its land operations. You will join the organization as the Assistant Director of Operations and initially assume responsibility for the Rimouski terminal alongside an experienced Operations Director who will transfer their knowledge and industry relationships. Following an integration period of approximately nine months, you will advance to the role of Director of Operations for the entire network. This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of an essential service through a structured and meaningful leadership transition. This is a permanent, full-time, on-site position located in Rimouski.

Tasks

  • Manage all activities at the Rimouski terminal, including receiving, warehousing, containerization, loading, and unloading of freight and vehicles;
  • Lead the terminal team (warehouse supervision, cargo operations, and administrative support), including scheduling, coaching, employee engagement, and performance management;
  • Coordinate dockside operations during vessel calls in collaboration with the ship's crew and port labour personnel;
  • Manage oversized freight, exceptional volumes, and operational disruptions (weather, equipment breakdowns, delays), while assessing their impact on customers;
  • Apply freight tariffs and ensure the accuracy of transportation documentation, including bills of lading, manifests, loading documents, and incident reports;
  • Handle complaints and claims with professionalism, consistency, and diligence;
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, cargo handling procedures, and dangerous goods transportation standards;
  • Plan the maintenance of containers, rolling equipment, and facilities;
  • Ultimately oversee all land operations across the network (terminals, port agents, and cargo handling teams) and participate on the management committee;
  • Perform any other related duties.

Advantages

  • Starting salary of approximately $100,000, progressing to $115,000 plus a vehicle allowance upon appointment as Director of Operations;
  • Clear and documented succession plan, with advancement to Director of Operations after approximately nine months;
  • Structured knowledge transfer with an experienced Operations Director who will remain available to provide support following the transition;
  • Group insurance benefits available from day one (upon proof of existing coverage);
  • Prior experience may be recognized to enhance vacation entitlement upon hiring;
  • Relocation assistance of up to $5,000 upon submission of supporting documentation;
  • Annual four-day training seminar;
  • A leadership role at the heart of an essential service, with a meaningful impact on remote communities.

Job requirements

  • 5 to 7 years of significant management experience, including direct supervision of employees;
  • Excellent command of both French and English, spoken and written; a significant portion of clients and partners are English-speaking;
  • Availability outside regular working hours during critical operational periods and unforeseen events (evenings and weekends);
  • Experience in transportation, logistics, warehousing, port operations, or industrial operations management; maritime or intermodal experience is considered an asset;
  • Experience managing remote or multi-site teams (asset);
  • Strong political awareness and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with customers and partners;
  • Curiosity and openness, with the ability to observe and understand existing practices before recommending changes;
  • College diploma or university degree in logistics, transportation, management, or a related field;
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft 365 suite; knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies (5S, Kaizen) or ISO standards is considered an asset.
