Permanent Position – Quebec City or Montréal A new challenge awaits you! Our client, the Syndicat de professionnelles et professionnels du gouvernement du Québec (SPGQ), represents more than 32,000 members and plays a key role in protecting their working conditions. To support its labour relations team, the SPGQ is seeking a Legal Counsel specialized in labour law, who will provide both representation and legal advice to management and union bodies. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Legal Counsel supports the team of labour relations advisors regarding the application and interpretation of laws, regulations, directives, and procedures mainly related to the workplace. They also interpret and apply relevant collective agreements. The Legal Counsel acts as counsel in arbitration and before the Administrative Labour Tribunal. In this capacity, they interpret and apply relevant collective agreements. They also act as a legal advisor to the Executive Committee and the union's management. Upon request, they provide legal opinions and advice.

Tasks

  • Represent SPGQ members before the Administrative Labour Tribunal, the Superior Court, and in grievance arbitration.
  • Serve as a resource person primarily for labour relations advisors in the analysis and handling of cases with legal implications.
  • Interpret laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with and support advisors within the department in carrying out their duties.
  • Conduct legal research and draft legal opinions, advice, and other legal documents, such as contracts.
  • Provide legal counsel to the Executive Committee.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by their supervisor.

  • Salary up to the maximum of the pay scale provided in the SCFP – Local 5367 collective agreement, i.e., $124,570. In addition, a 20% bonus is offered, for a total compensation of up to $149,484.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law and membership in good standing with the Barreau du Québec.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in labour law and representation before the courts.
  • Knowledge of collective agreements and the public sector labour relations environment in Quebec.
  • Experience in collective agreement negotiations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Important assets:
  • Experience in occupational health and safety law.
  • Experience appearing before higher courts.
  • Experience in a union environment.
